Spring is fast approaching! Who is ready for it? I know I am!
Why is it important to select the right colors/outfits for your photo shoot?
Clothing makes the portrait! Poorly selected clothing can really take away from a really otherwise amazing portrait. If you are not aware of what to wear, you can end up wearing clothing that stands out too much, taking attention off the subject. The photo then ends up being about the clothing, not the subjects. The well-chosen clothes should flatter the subjects and help make them look their best. Clothing is crucial! Choose wisely, resulting in amazing portraits you are happy with.
What colors should I wear for Spring Portraits?
When we think of Spring, we think of light, airy or bright colors. Here are just a few colors that make great Spring Portraits.
- Pale peach
- Blush pink
- Mint green
- Baby blue
- Cream
- Light gray
- Soft yellow
- Spring green
- Lavender
When choosing your color, you want to coordinate but not be matching. You can throw some subtle patterns in there that match well with the colors you choose.
For warm skin tones, think browns, golds, oranges, reds, olive green etc.
For cool skin tones, think grays, purples, blues etc.
Make sure your color scheme looks good on everyone.
What else should I consider when choosing outfits for my Family Portraits?
Another thing to keep in mind is your home décor. What color scheme do you have in your home? Since you will be hanging these portraits in your home you want them to coordinate with your décor.
Texture adds contrast & detail to an image. You want to try to incorporate some into your outfits. What is texture? Texture is found in the thickness and appearance of the fabric. Some common fabrics are cotton, wool, silk & tweed.
Accessorize! Flowers, hats, jewelry, jackets etc. all add to the photo. When choosing these don’t let them overwhelm the subject or photo. Accessories should complement the clothing and subject but not be the center of attention. Use them to add punches of color, detail or contrast to your portraits.
Let’s talk shoes! They matter! Try to again coordinate with your outfit. They can match your accessories, bring out some color pop or texture. There is nothing worse than a family portrait with distracting, worn out tennis shoes that don’t match.
Tips:
Buy clothing collections.
Choose color schemes.
Avoid blacks & whites.
No distracting patterns, images or logos.
